The Search for the Perfect Travel Brush
I love travel brushes; I always have. When I started watercolour painting, it was not unusual for me to cut down the handles on normal brushes just so they would fit into my travel bag!
Over the years, the travel brush market has grown, and these brushes are now more popular than ever with watercolourists and urban sketchers. They are available in synthetic or natural hair, and in many different styles and brush sizes.
My collection of travel brush sets are my prized art possessions. I thought I had everything I needed or desired... until I discovered the Fuumuui Travel Brush sets. I now have three in my collection, and a fourth is being delivered soon!
First Impressions: Design and Build Quality
Today, I would like to share my thoughts with you on the Three Brush Dual Tip Set in the Black finish (it's also available in Silver). This clever set gives you six different brush tips!
The first thing you notice is that each brush is individually wrapped, and the quality of the travel case is exceptional, protecting the brushes so well. The first time I saw these advertised on Facebook, I loved the idea of a dual-tipped travel brush. Why had no one thought about this before? I love the Black casing, each printed with the brush type, with the gold-coloured middle section/collar and the wooden handle. These brushes look and feel amazing, and the balance is perfect.
The Six Brush Tips Included in the Set
Cats Tongue - Size 8
I have never owned this brush type before, and it was an absolute pleasure to use! As with the other brushes in this set, they are lovely and soft, hold lots of water and paint, and maintain their shape well. It produces lovely brush strokes and really suits my style of painting. This is the one brush that surprised me the most in the set, and I look forward to using it again soon.
Detail Brush - Size 2
This is a very useful little brush, recommended for painting fine lines and adding extra detail. Ideal for trees, fences, and other intricate work.
Flat - Size 6
I don't usually use flat brushes, so I wasn't sure what to expect from this little brush. When testing brushes, I just put down paint and have fun, and this brush did not disappoint—it handled beautifully! Like all the brushes in this set, it can multi-task, excelling at lifting out, straight lines, and even detail work. This brush is now one of my go-to brushes.
Round - Size 6
This brush proved that my initial thoughts were so wrong! No, it's not just another round brush—it's awesome! It carries so much water and paint, has a lovely point, is suitable for all painting methods, and is also ideal for dry brushing. It also lifts paint out without any problems. This is the perfect all-around brush and an essential piece of kit.
Round - Size 10
Like the size 6, it is an amazing brush with an excellent point, and it holds so much paint and water! I actually found I had to remove excess water after cleaning or rinsing because of how much it holds. An ideal brush for laying down large areas of paint, or wetting a smaller surface prior to painting.
The Dagger Brush - Size 8
This is a total game-changer, seriously. You could do a whole painting just with this brush! In fact, I did—I got carried away testing it and forgot I had five other brush tips to choose from. I absolutely love it. Nothing is a problem for this brush; it's excellent. If I had to choose only one brush to paint with on my travels, this would be it.
Who is This Set For?
I feel this set is suitable for all watercolourists, whether you like to paint Plein Air, do Urban Sketching, or simply have a small painting area at home. It is a very versatile set, offering outstanding quality at an unbelievable price.
I love painting watercolours, and one of my continuing goals is to reduce the weight of my art travel bag. This set means that I can leave more brushes at home! We all try to find ways to cut down our kit when we travel or paint outdoors, and with this travel set, we don't have to cut down on quality for space or weight.
