We often talk about finding the perfect brush or the highest quality paper, but there is one unsung hero in every artist's studio: Brush Cleaner.

Invest in good tools, and they will last a lifetime—but only if you treat them right. We received a detailed review from a professional artist who tested our Brush Cleaner Soap. Not only did he love the eco-friendly formula, but also shared a fantastic step-by-step routine for conditioning natural hair brushes.

Below is his review, which I hope will be helpful to you.

First Impressions: Scent and Value

fuumuui 100% vegan paint brush cleaner soap

As someone who has used many different brands of brush cleaner over the years, I decided to try the Fuumuui brush cleaner when I was running low on my usual brand — and I was pleasantly surprised.

The first thing that struck me was the weight. After removing the cellophane and opening the box, I found a round tin containing 100g of brush cleaner. Upon unscrewing the lid, I was greeted by a fresh, clean, zingy citrus aroma — a welcome change from another brand I avoid due to its unpleasant smell.

Versatility: One Soap for All Mediums

This cleaner works beautifully not only for watercolour brushes but also for acrylic, gouache, and oil paints. It might even help with paint splashes on clothing. The product is 100% vegan-friendly, which means I can recommend it to everyone while supporting environmentally conscious choices.

The Built-in Cleaning Tool

Inside the tin is a circular cleaning mat, ideal for acrylic or oil brushes. It’s easy to rinse clean under the tap after use.

For watercolour brushes, I add a few drops of warm water or mist the soap lightly with water to soften it. This will help reduce wear and tear, especially on natural hair brushes.

Artist’s Guide: How to Clean & Condition Properly

(Here is my routine for the best results:)

Wet the brush with warm (not hot) water.

Gently work the soap into a foam/ lather (no scrubbing!).

Leave for a few moments, then rinse.

Repeat if required until the water is clear.

How to safely remove excess water from your brushes: Never pull at the bristles or brush hairs as this will loosen them and damage the brush. Instead, gently squeeze the brush between your fingers using a paper towel.

Conditioning: Once clean, I lightly dip the brush into the lather, reshape it, and lay it flat to dry. This conditions the brush and helps it maintain its shape between uses. Just rinse before your next painting session.

Final Thoughts: A Travel Essential?

I would love to see a smaller travel-sized tin (50mm) in the future to complement the studio tin. I feel it would be the perfect size for travelling and Urban sketching.

Looking after your Travel brushes whilst painting on location is best practice and 100% recommended, to protect and condition your Fuumuui brushes.

I wholeheartedly recommend this product — it’s a game-changer for brush care and the environment.
